Towards Grain (나뭇결을 향하여)

Towards Grain (나뭇결을 향하여) begins with the material resemblance between the rough surfaces of a tree trunk and rye bread. Bread is an ordinary and fragile material that can easily crumble by hand. Yet, once it has completely dried over time, it unexpectedly transforms into a material as hard as wood, acquiring an entirely different materiality.

This work focuses on the changing materiality of bread over time by reconstructing it in the form of a wooden pillar. Although it resembles a tree trunk, the form is not made of wood but of bread in its transformed state, shaped by the passage of time. The work questions our tendency to perceive materials as possessing fixed properties, suggesting that fragility and solidity are not opposing conditions but states that can continually shift over time.

Ultimately, this work understands the process of material transformation itself as a process of becoming. By overlaying the distinct entities of bread and wood, it reveals how a fragile material can, through the accumulation of time, transition into a solid material state. Here, time functions not simply as a force of decay, but as an agent that generates new material states.

Towards Grain (나뭇결을 향하여)은 나무 기둥과 호밀빵의 거친 표면이 지닌 물질적 유사성에서 출발한다. 빵은 손으로도 쉽게 부서질 만큼 연약한 일상의 재료이다. 그러나 시간이 지나 완전히 건조되면 예상과 달리 나무처럼 단단한 물질로 변화하며 전혀 다른 물성을 획득한다.

이 작품은 시간에 따라 변화하는 빵의 물성에 주목하여 빵을 나무 기둥의 형태로 재구성한다. 나무 기둥을 닮은 형상은 실제 목재가 아니라 시간이 만들어낸 빵의 새로운 상태이다. 이 작품은 우리가 재료를 고정된 성질로 인식하는 방식에 질문을 던지며 연약함과 견고함이 서로 대립하는 개념이 아니라 시간 속에서 끊임없이 전환될 수 있음을 보여준다.

결국 이 작품은 물질이 변화하는 과정 자체를 하나의 생성 과정으로 바라본다. 연약한 물질이 시간의 축적을 통해 견고한 물질 상태로 전환되는 과정을, 빵과 나무라는 서로 다른 존재를 겹쳐 놓음으로써 드러낸다. 이때 시간은 사물을 단순히 소멸시키는 것이 아니라, 새로운 물질 상태(material state)를 생성하는 주체로 기능한다.
