Seoyeong Ma's (b. 2000, Incheon, South Korea; lives/works: Incheon & Vienna) practice explores materials and places that transform over time, and the traces that remain within them. Her work focuses on what disappears and what remains through processes of transformation, destruction, and disappearance.

Working across installation, sculpture, drawing, video, and performance, Ma takes the inherent properties and processes of transformation of materials such as bread, tiles, clay, and clay pigeons as starting points for her practice. As soft bread dries and hardens like the bark of a tree, or clay forms collapse through rain and remain as fragments, she uses the physical properties and transformative processes of materials not merely as phenomena, but as metaphoric means through which cycles of deconstruction and reconstruction, disappearance and persistence are revealed.

Recently, Ma has expanded her interest in material transformation toward questions of history, memory, and place. She is particularly interested in how institutional spaces such as natural history museums collect, classify, and preserve histories and objects. Through this, she explores the intersections between time accumulated in materials and places, individual memories, and historical narratives.

She is currently studying Sculpture and Space at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. She received a BFA in Ceramic Art from Kyung Hee University in Seoul, South Korea, in 2023.

마서영은 인천과 비엔나를 기반으로 활동하며 시간에 따라 변화하는 물질과 장소, 그리고 그 안에 남겨지는 흔적을 탐구한다. 그녀의 작업은 물질이 변화하고 파괴되며 소멸하는 과정에서 무엇이 사라지고 무엇이 남는지에 주목한다.

그녀는 설치, 조각, 드로잉, 영상, 퍼포먼스 등 다양한 매체를 아우르며 작업해 왔다. 빵, 타일, 점토, 클레이 피전과 같은 물질의 고유한 성질과 변화 과정에서 작업의 출발점을 찾는다. 부드러운 빵이 건조되어 나무처럼 단단해지고, 점토로 만들어진 형태가 비를 맞아 녹아내리는 것처럼, 그녀는 재료의 물리적 특성과 변화 과정을 단순한 현상에 머무르지 않고 해체와 재구성, 소멸과 지속이 반복되는 순환을 드러내는 은유적 매개로 활용한다.

최근에는 물질의 변화에 대한 관심을 역사와 기억, 장소의 문제로 확장하고 있다. 특히 자연사박물관과 같은 제도적 공간이 역사와 대상을 수집하고 분류하며 보존하는 방식에 주목한다. 이를 바탕으로 물질과 장소에 축적된 시간과 개인의 기억, 역사적 서사가 서로 교차하는 지점을 탐구하고 있다.

그녀는 현재 비엔나 응용예술대학교(University of Applied Arts Vienna)에서 조각과 공간(Sculpture and Space)을 전공하고 있다. 2023년 경희대학교에서 도예학과 학사 학위(BFA)를 취득했다.
