The Second Hearth

This work begins with the shared transformation of brick and bread: both originate as powdered raw materials and, through fire, are transformed into new material states. In this process, the two materials shift from natural substances to cultural artifacts shaped by human intervention. Fire functions as a creative force that hardens materials and gives them new form, while simultaneously acting as a destructive force that ultimately reduces everything to ash. This work focuses on the paradoxical nature of fire, which performs the opposing roles of creation and destruction.

The house is one of the most fundamental structures made possible through humanity's mastery of fire. Just as a house is built by stacking bricks, constructing a house from bread is an identical architectural act in which only the material has changed. The completed bread house becomes a miniature representation of human civilization—another invention brought into being through fire.

Yet the completed house is ultimately consumed by fire once again. The fire that initially served as a tool of creation is transformed into an instrument of destruction. Rather than treating creation and destruction as opposing concepts, this work understands them as recurring processes within a single cycle, with fire acting as the medium that enables this circulation. Every form created by human hands contains the possibility of its own disappearance from the moment it comes into being, revealing that civilization itself exists within a continuous cycle of creation and dissolution.

이 작품은 벽돌과 빵이 모두 가루 상태의 원료에서 시작해 불을 거치며 새로운 물질적 상태로 변화한다는 공통점에서 출발한다. 두 재료는 자연의 물질에서 인간의 개입을 통해 형성된 문화적 산물로 전환된다. 불은 재료를 단단하게 만들고 새로운 형태를 부여하는 창조의 힘인 동시에, 모든 것을 재로 되돌리는 파괴의 힘이기도 하다. 이 작업은 하나의 요소인 불이 창조와 소멸이라는 상반된 역할을 수행한다는 점에 주목한다.

집은 불을 다루는 기술을 통해 인간이 만들어낸 가장 근본적인 구조물이다. 벽돌을 쌓아 집을 짓듯 빵을 쌓아 집을 만드는 행위는 재료만 다를 뿐 동일한 건축적 행위이다. 빵으로 완성된 집은 인간이 구축한 문명의 축소된 형태이자, 불을 통해 탄생한 또 하나의 발명품이다.

그러나 완성된 집은 다시 불 속에서 소멸한다. 처음에는 창조의 도구였던 불은 마지막에는 파괴의 도구로 전환된다. 이 작품은 창조와 소멸을 서로 대립하는 개념이 아니라 하나의 순환 안에서 반복되는 과정으로 바라보며, 불은 그 순환을 가능하게 하는 매개가 된다. 인간이 만들어낸 모든 형태는 탄생의 순간부터 이미 소멸의 가능성을 품고 있으며, 문명 역시 끊임없는 생성과 소멸의 순환 속에 놓여 있음을 드러낸다.
